DIRTY HONEY – Dirty Honey (EP Review)

Dirty HoneyMany times when I have a few albums to listen too and write reviews on, I’ll be honest, it’s the album cover or pictures that accompany it that make me choose which I listen to first. To be completely honest, the cover for Dirty Honey didn’t scream out “Listen To Me.” Unfortunately, it kinda got lost in the shuffle of all the albums I have to listen too. That is until now. I posted a review very recently of another great album and someone on social media mentioned to me about the Dirty Honey EP.  Honestly, I completely forgot it was in my mix. Quickly rectifying that I fired it up and gave it an honest listen while doing some simple household chores. I’m glad I did. Instantly I was reminded of the ’90s when the Black Crowes hit the scene. The sounds and imagery all came together.

About The Band

Dirty Honey is an honest, and true “Old School” band from Los Angeles, CA, with an honest name. It’s dirty, gritty, but at the same time so smooth and sticky like honey, it sticks in your head and won’t leave. It simply oozes that feel of Southern Rock and Blues in the vein of Led Zepplin, The DOORS, and the Black Crowes.

This EP is very well-written and exceptionally played. The production and mastering of this EP is without exception. Since its release, Dirty Honey have basically been touring nonstop. After doing some research, it seems they always leave the crowd wanting more, and asking, “Where the hell did these guys come from?!”

The EP

The lead-off track, which is also the well-received single, “When I’m Gone“,  is a straight forward rocking song with catchy hooks, and melodies. “Rolling 7s” is a great follow up tune. A simple riff and basic beat, the song builds to a great chorus and could get any audience off their feet. Up next is “Heartbreaker“.  A tune about a love, that speaks for itself in the lyrics but isn’t a ballad by any means.

To round up the end of the album is “Down The Road“.  With a stunning guitar start and vocals that burst into existence, the song flows magnificently.  Fantastic solos and well sung, it’s a definite hit in my books! Finishing off this masterful EP is “Scars“. A sound to all its own in this song, but still fits in like a missing piece of the puzzle. This one has almost a Doors feel to it and is again true to the sound that Dirty Homey has created.

Psycho Thoughts

Having it blasted about eight times throughout of my speakers to my neighbour’s dismay, it’s one that I can honestly say shocked and surprised me. It is with certainty that I can say that these guys have a promising road ahead of them. This EP gets a 9 outta 10 from me, losing a point simply because of the CD art. In my opinion, that is as important as the sound itself. You have got to grab the attention of the listeners seeing it for the first time on the shelves. Without knowing the sound and the band’s reputation it gets lost in the mix.

Peace!
