OCEAN HILLS – Santa Monica (Album Review)

OCEAN HILLS – Santa Monica

Santa Monica is about sand, the beach, and living life, with fun and happiness. With all the negativity and fear going on in today’s world, this song is very much needed. So if you’re into guitar solos and Rock N Roll this song is for you. Hope it can brighten up your day after hearing it! Enjoy!” – Ocean Hills

History of the Hills

He has been the voice of the fantastic melodic hardcore band Ignite for 25 years but just left the band to pursue his passions in music and animal rescue.  Zoli Téglás has also been the frontman for the bands Pennywise and the Misfits. An activist for animal rights and environmental protection for many years, Zoli also possesses a voice that is instantly recognizable and so very strong.

Ocean Hills is his brand new outfit. Zoli comments, “the songs are great, the musicianship is amazing, the guitar solos are incredible, and the vocals are melodic and hard-hitting. Rock anthem stuff!!!

However, Ocean Hills is not a one-man project. Peter Lukacs (guitars), Daniel Szebenyi (keyboards, bass) and Reinder Oldenburger (guitars) share Teglas‘ vision and were key to bringing it to life.  Zoli is the first one to credit his bandmates for making the debut album.

The debut E.P. (to be an album) consists of three hard-hitting and uplifting anthems.  The title track is my new favourite driving companion with a chorus that literally makes you want to jump around and smile like it is 2019.  It has lyrics that are a love song to California and this is somewhat at odds with the more serious content of “A Separate Peace.

Death or Liberty” seems to rail at the corruption of politics and it is catchy as can be whilst urging us to “tear the system down.”

The echoes of Zoli‘s hardcore past scream themselves alive on the last track, “A Separate Peace” where the music goes harder until solidifying into an amazing chorus.  In fact, I also hear a throwback to the Prodigy‘s “Firestarter” at the entrance of the tune.

Run to the Hills?

This is top quality riffage and I have always loved Zoli‘s vocals for Ignite.  With strong summer imagery and super simmering sonics, the band are onto a winner.  I look forward to spending more time in the Ocean.

The full album will be released on 27th November on AFM Records.
