CRIMSON STAR – The Olde Dawg (EP Review)

CRIMSON STAR - The Olde Dawg (EP Review)CRIMSON STAR Rising

The Brummie boys are back with a new riff-tastic release.  I was a huge fan of their last release, Bay View and this E.P. builds on that nicely.  Crimson Star are made up of Jay D Shaw on guitar/voice, Roj Ash on Bass and new drummer Chris “King Thumper” Hopton.

The three songs are to be released on 3rd April.  The band were cool enough to send it to me to review and I was thoroughly impressed with their new tunes.

The Olde Dawg

The proceedings kick off with the lead title track single and this shows that their original blend of Sabbath and Stoner Rock is intact. The new drummer King Thumper heralds the new era with decent foot-stomping bass drum work and then the fuzzytone fury of the lead riff blasts through.  It is as if Tony Iommi was jamming with Pearl Jam or Queens of the Stone Age.  Brilliant fun and great to drive through.

Second tune up is equally as riffy.  Busy bass and the stoner like singing of Jay D punctuates this track.  It also hits a few Nirvana-like spots as the song unfolds.  “In Bloom” comes to mind at the chorus, but this is still a very cool tune.

The final song comes out with a faster tempo, but still with the trademark riffing.  It is a great finale to a class record.  All is good with the three-pack punch of this E.P.

The band is great and the production is powerful and clear.  My only slight reservation is that the songs can blend together and I would like to see a bit more variety on a short release like this.  Still, top-notch rocking and I look forward to more tunes from this talented thundering trio.
