SPUDGUN ASSASSINS – Spudgun Assassins (Album Review)

Every once in a while, I get someone tossing me an indie band album, asking me to, “Check these guys out”. For instance, what happened in this case.  Instead of usually saying sure, and tossing it aside, I decided to give it a chance based on the name of the group alone. The name Spudgun Assassins intrigued me enough to give it a spin. The fact that I played all the way through and avoided the skip button tells me a lot. These guys have simply got what it takes.

With well-written tunes, flowing guitars & bass, and the kick of the drums I wanted to know more. As a result, I started doing a little research. These guys from Chichester, UK, are a damn good band! With influences ranging from Thin Lizzy to Rush, and Iron Maiden to Guns ‘N’ Roses, I wasn’t too sure what to expect, to be honest. In addition, I was very pleasantly shocked. This six-track, self-titled, and self-produced EP is just simply called, Spudgun Assassins, but this isn’t a record made out in a garage with an iPhone recorder going! The production is absolutely phenomenal. The six tracks this album delivers, have a sound of nothing but good, clean rock and roll.

In conclusion, if you’re looking for head pounding, and slam dancing style you might want to look elsewhere. However, if you’re in the mood for just great playing, melodic hooks, and well-written tunes, then you should check Spudgun Assassins out. Above all, and most importantly, after listening twice, I immediately thought, that these guys should’ve been around in the ’80s. They might have missed their window, but if the music industry has taught and shown us anything, it is that what is old can be new again, and what is new, can be good. We just have to listen!
